Learn More About Laser Skin Resurfacing

Fractional Laser Skin Resurfacing can restore more youthful skin with minimal discomfort and without prolonged healing time. It has revolutionized skin care and is particularly suited to treat the aging and sun-damaged skin of many Tampa Bay Floridians. It can improve skin texture and tone, smooth wrinkles and fine lines on the cheeks and around the mouth and eyes, reduce scars, and improve overall skin elasticity. The benefits can go beyond immediate skin tightening, as this laser stimulates the formation of new collagen in the deeper skin layers. The result is a deeper skin rejuvenation that will continue to improve with time. This intense treatment can significantly reduce the appearance of wrinkles, lines, and sun damage on the face, neck, hands, and other parts of the body.

In Tampa, what techniques are used for Laser Skin Resurfacing?

Tampa plastic surgeons use precise techniques to treat your skin. Using the latest fractional technology, controlled energy beams of precise laser light are directed to a programmed fraction of the skin’s surface, leaving small bridges of untouched skin. Only the selected areas of aged and damaged skin are treated, and healthier skin replaces the prior skin imperfections. Unlike older laser procedures, this resurfacing process enables faster healing with less downtime. In most cases, the damaged skin is replaced within a few days by new skin, enabling you to return to normal activities sooner.

How is Laser Skin Resurfacing performed?

The fractional laser skin resurfacing is an office-based procedure. An entire face can be done in about 30 minutes.

Laser skin resurfacing is typically performed under local anesthetic. During treatment, light energy is directed at the skin. This destroys the surface layer of the skin and heats the lower layers, shrinking the collagen fibers. The healed skin will be firmer, tighter, and smoother.

Following treatment, a mild redness of the skin may occur, similar to a light sunburn. There may be some skin peeling. A mild, hydrating lotion can be used to keep the skin moisturized and protected until healing occurs. In addition, ice packs and over-the-counter pain relievers can be used to treat any discomfort or swelling. Most patients are able to apply makeup after about a week and resume normal activity in several days.

What you can expect from your treatment

The results of fractional laser treatment are both immediate and long-term. Treatment results are visible immediately and become more evident over the next few weeks and months, as continued collagen formation provides smoother and tighter skin. Often, patients request further improvement with additional treatments spaced 3 to 4 weeks apart. With proper skin care and sun blockers, the results can be maintained for many years. Tampa residents will achieve different results depending on their skin’s response to laser treatment.

FAQ

Who can be treated?

Any patient who is not pregnant or has any other serious health condition that would impair healing can be considered for laser therapy. Most skin types that show signs of aging or sun damage are good candidates.

Is laser therapy safe?

Yes. The laser uses invisible light. There is no radiation in this light, and there is no increased risk of skin cancer. It is, however, important not to tan for three weeks before and after treatment.

Does it hurt?

Every person has a different threshold of discomfort. A topical anesthetic can be used prior to the therapy and most people feel as if they have a mild sunburn for approximately 1 to 3 hours after treatment.

How long do results last?

Laser therapy cannot stop the aging process, although it can temporarily reverse the signs of aging. In the weeks and months following treatment, the body repairs the deep dermal tissues that have been affected by the laser treatment. This produces changes that will continue to improve over the next 2 to 3 months, depending on the aggressiveness of your therapy.
